The main purpose of a buddy reading program is to provide a safe place where children can develop! A love of reading and books. The proposed buddy reading program is a joint venture between the Lihir Meri Divelopmen Senta (LMDS) and the Lihir Union of Students (LUS)

The LMDS is a not for profit women's association running programs and functions supporting the development of women and youth on the Lihir Group of Islands

A 2 year old who was reading the Alphabet Big Book was observed to be able to identify many of the items in the pictures associated with the letter. Many of the pictures in the books could be read in an English or Tok Pisin context.

The Lihir Tutorme Womens Association (LTWA) conducted their first Buddy Reading session with the Lihir Elementary School children in November 2014 . The LTWA is made up of women representatives from the 15 Nimamar Local Level Government Wards and one womens groups involved on the advisory group operating the LMDS. They have also been currently actively involved in Counselling Training for the last two (2) months with various stakeholders and their visitors ahve been also able to use the buddyt reading library at the Senta during these sessions.

Following the success of the LMDS/ LTWA activities the Lihir-Bouganville Association has been energised to conduct fund raising of their own for the purchase of two library sets of reading materials from Australia. They recently raised PGK5,000 and, as well, had a large amount of pre-loved books donated for redistribution.  They have placed and order with Laikim Buk in Australia and will shortly receive their library sets to be shipped off to the West Coast and Central Bouganville where communities have been impacted by recent volcanic activity and as well are still recovering from hostilities in teh Bouganville crises.

85% of the project funds provided by EGF has allowed acquisition of a collection of reading and learning materials and to store them in a library at the Lihir Meri Divelopmen Senta (LMDS).  The materials have been sourced from "Laikim Buk", a specialist book supplier in Australia. The books are very unique as they suit the Melanesian context and contain pictures the children are able to identify with in the books.

Unallocated funds of around PGK760 (AUD $370) are being held in trust by the LMDS to support ongoing storage and use of the books in the Senta and in local community schools.  The funds will also help with transportation to carry out lessons in local schools.
